What to Wear for your First Dance Class

What to Wear for your First Dance Class

Starting a new hobby can be daunting especially if you are unsure of what you need to wear. Undertaking your first class can be quite overwhelming as you will often be meeting a new teacher or coach and sometimes joining in with people that have been attending much longer. One thing you want to be sure of is that you are prepared and have everything you need. If you’re wondering what to wear to your first dance class I’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you.

Comfort First

During a dance class, you are going to want freedom to move your body and therefore wearing something comfortable to your first dance class is essential. Try to avoid anything too restrictive or materials that are ridged or stiff. You will also want to avoid anything too baggy particularly on your legs as this can get in the way and cause accident or injury. In the same breath avoid waste bands that are too tight or ‘dig in’ if you are uncomfortable during your class you won’t enjoy it or be able to perform to the best of your ability.

Breathable Fibres

You want to ensure that the fabric you are wearing is breathable to prevent you getting too hot. Clothing that is made from cotton or linen is an ideal option to help keep you cool and allow the air to circulate during your dance class. Even if you start your session feeling cold once you get moving you will warm up quite quickly.

Footwear

Depending on the type of dance and where your lessons will take place will depend on what footwear you need to consider. Some dance studios have a strict ‘no outside shoe’ policy so you will need to consider this. For your first dance lesson, bare feet are often acceptable but it is worth checking with your dance studio and finding out what they best advise. Some dance studios have hire shoes that you can borrow so you don’t have to purchase your own specialist shoes immediately.

Leotards & Other Specialist Items

Leotards are ideal for during a dance class as they allow your body to move freely without restriction and won’t get in the way during dance moves. Once you have tried your first dance class it is advisable to consider investing in a leotard to help you get the most out of your classes. You can buy dance leotards online from dance depot and browse the full selection they offer. Leotards are a light, comfortable and flattering option making them ideal to wear during dance classes.

Depending on what you want to get out of dance classes there are a number of other specialist items that you can purchase. Although these aren’t essential for your first dance class it may be something you want to look into if you continue to pursue your classes. Your dance teacher or coach will be able to offer the best advice on the items that will most benefit you so be sure to discuss this when you feel you are ready for the next step.
