What Is a Swip? Slimming World’s New Name for Syns Explained

close up of bananas

If you’ve recently heard Slimming World members talking about “Swips” and found yourself wondering what on earth they’re on about, don’t worry, you’re not alone. One of the biggest Slimming World changes for 2026 is the introduction of ‘Swips’, a brand-new term that replaces the original plan word Syns.

If you’ve followed Slimming World for years, this might feel like a huge change that could take some getting used to. If you’re entirely new to the plan, you may be wondering what a Swip actually is and whether it works differently from a Syn or not.

The good news is that the answer is surprisingly simple and sounds more confusing in theory than it actually is!

As always, before undertaking any kind of weight loss or lifestyle change, it is always best to speak to a medical professional or registered dietician who is best suited to give personalised advice on your individual health needs and health issues. This blog post has been researched to the best of my ability, and the information posted is accurate at the time of publication. Soph-obsessed is not affiliated in any way with Slimming World. The information in this article is included for information only. For up-to-date information on all aspects of the SW plan, visit their website directly.

What Does Swip Mean Anyway?

No it’s not a random alien word someone created by sitting on a keyboard – Swip stands for:

Slimming World Individual Pick

It is the new name Slimming World has chosen for foods and drinks that were previously assigned a Syn value.

Things like:

will still be counted in exactly the same way they always have been. The only thing that’s changing is the name.

Are Swips Different From Syns?

Simply put – No.

This is probably the most important thing to understand. Although this sounds like a big change a Swip is simply a Syn with a new name. The values remain the same, the foods remain the same and the way you use them within the Slimming World plan remains the same. So simply put if your favourite chocolate bar was 10 Syns before, it will still have the same value under the new Swips system going forward.

The good news is nothing is changing in terms of how Food Optimising works.

Why Has Slimming World Changed Syns to Swips?

According to Slimming World, the decision was made following feedback from members and potential members around the connotation of syns. Some people felt the word “Syn” carried negative vibes and made certain foods feel naughty, bad or forbidden. Which, as we know, can encourage an unhealthy relationship with food.

While Slimming World has always promoted flexibility and encouraged its members to enjoy treats in moderation, the company recognised that language can have a powerful impact on how people think about food. Essentially as the times have changed the term syns has been outdated and outgrown. The new term Swips is designed to feel more neutral and less judgmental. The idea is that these foods aren’t “good” or “bad” – they’re simply individual choices that can still fit within a balanced weight loss plan.

How Many Swips Can You Have?

The guidance remains exactly the same as it was when they were called Syns. Slimming World still encourages members to enjoy their Swips as part of a flexible and sustainable approach to weight loss. I personally think treats are essential to weight loss long term and they stop burnout and misery! The aim isn’t to eliminate treats completely. Instead, it’s about making conscious choices and finding a balance that works for you.

What Foods Count as Swips?

Many foods that aren’t classed as Free Foods or Healthy Extras will fall into the Swips category.

Examples include:

As always, members can use the Slimming World app and barcode scanner to find the latest values.

Will Existing Slimming World Members Use the Word Swip?

Honestly? Like any change, it might take a while. Many Slimming World members have spent years talking about Syns. For some people, it’s become second nature. I suspect plenty of us will accidentally say Syns for quite some time yet but I don’t think that truly matters.

That doesn’t mean the change is a bad thing, though. New members joining the programme may find the updated terminology easier to understand and less intimidating and if it helps build a healthier relationship with food I am all for it!

My Thoughts on the Change

I’ll be honest, hearing the word Swip for the first time felt a little strange. I don’t feel like it glides off the tongue. Like many long-time Slimming World followers, I’ve used the word Syns for years, and it’s become part of everyday weight loss vocabulary. That said, I completely understand why Slimming World has made the change, and I think for the most part, it’s for the best.

Food shouldn’t come with guilt attached. If changing the language helps people build a healthier relationship with food and feel more positive about their journey, then that’s hard to argue with. Personally, I think most members will adjust pretty quickly. After all, the plan itself isn’t changing. The principles remain exactly the same and that is the most important thing.

Final Thoughts

A Swip is simply Slimming World’s new name for what was previously known as a Syn.

The foods haven’t changed.

The values haven’t changed.

The plan hasn’t changed.

Only the terminology is different.

Whether you’re excited about the update or still finding yourself accidentally saying Syns, one thing remains true: flexibility is still at the heart of Slimming World.

And that’s something that isn’t changing any time soon.
