Slimming World stands out as a widely embraced weight loss program dedicated to fostering a well-rounded and health-conscious approach to eating. This plan places a significant emphasis on enjoying filling, nutrient-dense foods, steering away from the confines of strict calorie counting or deprivation. It introduces a distinctive “Food Optimising” system that can create long-term lifestyle changes. As part of their plan, they have a number of different categorisations for food. Healthy Extras, Free Food, Speed Food and Syns. If you’ve just joined Slimming World and find all of the information overwhelming, don’t worry. I’ve put together an unofficial guide to syns and navigating the Slimming World Syn calculator below.
As always, before undertaking any kind of weight loss or lifestyle change, it is always best to speak to a medical professional who is best suited to give personalised advice on your individual health needs.

Although great care has gone into the production of this post, it is for information purposes only. I am not affiliated with Slimming World, and they often tweak their plan throughout the year. What Are Slimming World Syns?
Slimming World is a fantastic structured plan that helps many people make long-term lifestyle changes and achieve their weight loss goals. Their ethos focuses on what they call ‘food optimisation.’ It’s about a balanced and healthy diet of nutritional foods. Unlike calorie counting, where you have to weigh and measure everything, Slimming World is a much easier concept for some.

In Slimming World, “syns” is a term used to refer to the concept of synergy. Syns are a way of quantifying the energy value of foods that are not classified as Free Foods or Healthy Extras in the Slimming World plan. These foods often include items that are higher in calories, sugar, or unhealthy fats.
Members of Slimming World are allocated a certain number of syns each day to use on these less-nutrient-dense foods. The idea is to encourage a balanced and sustainable approach to eating, where individuals can enjoy treats or less-healthy options in moderation without completely restricting them.
The number of syns allowed varies based on individual circumstances and weight loss goals. The Slimming World plan encourages members to make healthier food choices while still allowing for flexibility and enjoyment in their eating habits.

How Many Syns Per Day?
Every member of Slimming World receives a ‘syn’ allowance. It doesn’t matter what weight you are or how much exercise you do. The only difference can be in the amount of “syns” each person gets. To fully understand the amount of ‘syns’ you are allocated it is best to discuss this with your consultant at group or using the Slimming World online portal. It’s usually between 5-15 syns per day.
Syn Values
To accurately determine the Syns in your selected treats, the only dependable method is to use the Slimming World App or access the slimmingworld.com website. They have a database which holds the syn values or a whole host of tasty treats you may choose to use your syn value on. If you can’t find the value, then you can contact them, and they will calculate this for you.

If you want to calculate your own syn values, there are a number of Slimming World Syn Calculator for free apps and websites. They use the formula:
1 Syn = 20 Calories.
So if you wanted a bag of crisps that was 120 calories, the syns would be: 6
Although this calculation makes a lot of sense, it isn’t the only way that syns are calculated. Using this formula, although a good guide, cannot ever be 100% accurate. Some people use this method as a quick ‘on the go’ way to calculate their syns and find it really useful in their weight loss.

What Could You Use Your Syns On?
Some people like to use their Syns on a glass of wine or an alcoholic beverage. Personally, I have always been the kind of person that likes to eat my sins rather than drink them, so I like to use them on chocolate and sweet treats. You can also use your syns in recipes for sauces and accompaniments. The possibilities are endless, and as long as you are accurately recording and measuring your syns, you will find them a great addition to your Slimming World Plan.
Can I Save Up My Syns
There is great controversy over whether you can save your syns and consume them all in one day. The official stance is that they should be enjoyed each day, but I do know women who were top slimmers at group that did this every week without a problem. If you want to stick to the plan officially, then it is best not to save them up, but remember, this journey is unique and individual to you, so it may work for you.

Slimming World Syn Calculator Tracking
I love that on the Slimming World plan, you don’t have to weigh and measure many things. It makes life as a busy mum on the go much easier. One thing that is important to mention, though, is tracking. Especially in the beginning, I always recommend that everyone logs and tracks what they consume. Your consultant will tell you the same. This FREE printable can help.
Logging what you eat helps keep track of your syn allowance and your Slimming World Syn Calculator results. This helps keep you on plan and accountable. It is a great way to compare your losses with how well you stayed on plan. It’s also a great way to just remember how many syn’s you have eaten and or have left.
In Conclusion
Syns are a great way to still have treats and additions each day without completely breaking free from the plan. It’s always best to use the Slimming World Syn Calculator 2023 on the Slimming World app or Slimming World online for the most accurate results.
