If you’re a Slimming World member, you’ve probably heard whispers about some big changes coming in 2026. And if you’ve been following the plan for a while, some of these updates might take a little getting used to.
From the introduction of a brand-new Healthy Extra category to the retirement of the word “Syns”, Slimming World is making some of its biggest changes in years, and I’m here to unofficially hold your hand through the process.
But what exactly is changing, why are they doing it, and what does it mean for your weight loss journey? Let’s take a closer look.
As always, before undertaking any kind of weight loss or lifestyle change, it is always best to speak to a medical professional or registered dietician who is best suited to give personalised advice on your individual health needs and health issues. This blog post has been researched to the best of my ability, and the information posted is accurate at the time of publication. Soph-obsessed is not affiliated in any way with Slimming World. The Biggest Change: Syns Are Becoming Swips
Perhaps the most talked-about change that we are seeing is that Slimming World is retiring the term Syns. From 2026, foods that previously carried a ‘Syn’ value will instead be known as Swips, which stands for Slimming World Individual Picks. Now don’t panic – the foods themselves aren’t changing. Chocolate, crisps, biscuits, alcohol and sauces will still be counted in exactly the same way. The only difference is the name they are referred to.
According to Slimming World, some people felt the word “Syn” carried negative connotations and created feelings of guilt around food choices. The move to Swips is intended to make the language feel more positive, supportive and inclusive. This is very relevant to the times and how weight loss and body positivity are viewed.
Personally, I think this will divide opinion. Many long-term members have used the word Syn for years, and it’s become part of everyday Slimming World language, and it will certainly take some getting used to. Especially for older members or those who already find the plan overwhelming. However, if I am honest, I can also understand the argument that no food should be labelled as “good” or “bad” and it is something I do preach on the daily.
Whether you love it or hate it, it looks like Swips are here to stay.

Healthy Fats Are Joining Healthy Extras
This is probably the most significant practical change to the plan, and I was surprised when I heard this, although it definitely was needed. Slimming World is introducing a brand-new Healthy Extra category focused on healthy fats.
This means foods such as:
- Nuts
- Nut butters
- Seeds
- Avocado
- Olives
- Healthy oils
will now be included as a Healthy Extra choice. Until now, Healthy Extras have mainly focused on calcium-rich foods and fibre-rich foods such as milk, cheese, wholemeal bread and cereals. But under the new system, members will be able to choose three Healthy Extras per day, with at least one being a calcium choice to be fully on plan.
My opinion: I actually think this is a positive and well-needed change. For years, many slimmers have been nervous about foods like avocado, nuts and olive oil because they’re higher in calories. While portion sizes will still matter and it is important these foods are weighed and measured, these foods can absolutely form part of a balanced diet and offer nutritional benefits that go beyond calorie counting. We are learning more and more about the positive benefits of healthy fats, particularly in perimenopausal and menopausal women so kudos to Slimming World for making this change to the plan to help support people.
Body Magic Is Getting a New Name
If you’ve ever attended Slimming World groups, you’ll be familiar with the term ‘Body Magic.’ Body Magic is essentially Slimming World’s activity programme, and it encourages members to move more and build healthier habits around exercise. From 2026, Body Magic will simply become Slimming World’s Active Lifestyle Programme. Don’t worry though, nothing about the activity advice itself is changing. This is simply a terminology update designed to make the purpose clearer.
IMAGE Therapy Is Also Being Renamed
Lots of language changes, and another long-standing Slimming World phrase is IMAGE Therapy. For anyone who has ever sat through group discussions wondering what IMAGE actually stands for, you’re not alone. Simply put, IMAGE Therapy (Individual Motivation And Group Experience) will now be known simply as Slimming World’s Support System. Again, don’t fret, this is more about clarity than changing the actual support members receive in group.
Why Is Slimming World Making These Changes?
Slimming World says these updates are designed to make the plan more inclusive, easier to understand and more welcoming for new members. The company wants to move further away from language that could be interpreted as judgmental and place greater emphasis on flexibility, balance and long-term healthy habits. It makes sense for a company that has been running as long as Slimming World has that some modernisation and changes with the times are needed. Whether you see that as positive or unnecessary rebranding will probably depend on your personal viewpoint and your current relationship with the company, or if you are a new member. Ultimately, I think that although it may take a few months to get used to and to fall into rhythm with, before long, these changes will feel like the fixtures and fittings.

So, What Are the Benefits?
There are several potential positives:
Less Guilt Around Food
For some people, replacing the word Syn with Swip may help remove feelings of shame around eating treats and encourage a healthier relationship with food. Anything that abolishes guilt and promotes positive relations with food is a plus.
More Focus on Nutritional Balance
Giving healthy fats their own category highlights the importance of foods like nuts, seeds and avocado, which provide valuable nutrients alongside calories and help members incorporate these foods into their plan with ease and without fear or old-fashioned stigma.
Easier for New Members
The new terminology is arguably more self-explanatory than some of Slimming World’s older language, thus making it easier for a new member to pick up and use.
BUT Are There Any Downsides?
As with any major change, there may be a few challenges, especially in the beginning. Let’s be honest, as a species, humans do hate change, but change isn’t always a bad thing.
Existing Members May Resist It
Honestly? Syns have been Syns for decades. Many members won’t see the need for a name change, and this could cause some resistance. I’m sure some people will continue to call them syns, and I don’t necessarily see that as a problem, to be fair.
There Will Be a Learning Curve
Understandably, people will need time to adjust to new terminology, new Healthy Extra options and updated resources.
Healthy Fats Still Need Portion Control
While healthy fats offer nutritional benefits, they’re also calorie-dense. It’s important not to assume that “healthy” automatically means unlimited. I have mentioned before that one of my peeves with Slimming World is that the education around the plan varies based on the quality of the consultant at the group you attend. A good consultant will educate on the importance of fats, but also the crucial point that these need to be weighed and measured correctly in order to protect a member’s weight loss. A poor consultant won’t, and this is where things sometimes fall down for people.
What Are My Thoughts on the Slimming World Changes for 2026
When I first heard about these updates, I had mixed feelings. Part of me feels a little nostalgic about the word Syns because it’s been such a huge part of Slimming World culture for years. If you’ve followed the plan for any length of time, you’ll probably know exactly what I mean.
That said, I completely understand the reasoning behind the change. Food shouldn’t come with guilt attached, and if changing the language helps people feel more positive about their journey, that’s a good thing. Maybe this modernisation will help people and their relationship with food, and that can only be a good thing.
I’m particularly pleased to see healthy fats being given more prominence. Foods like avocado, nuts and olive oil have always had a place in a healthy diet, and I think encouraging people to include them sensibly is a step in the right direction. The stigma that fat is bad and you can only lose weight on a low-fat or no-fat diet is complete ballony. Every diet needs healthy fat its a major food group and a substantial macro. As a perimenopausal woman, I know the importance of fat in the diet personally, and I’m glad this change has been incorporated.
At its core, Slimming World remains the same. The principles of filling foods, flexibility, support and sustainability haven’t changed. The names may be different, but the goal remains exactly the same: helping people lose weight in a way they can maintain for life.
Final Thoughts
The Slimming World changes for 2026 aren’t a complete overhaul of the plan, but they are some of the biggest updates we’ve seen in years, and it is quite refreshing to be honest. The introduction of healthy fats as a Healthy Extra option and the move from Syns to Swips are likely to be the changes people talk about most. Whether you’re excited, sceptical or somewhere in the middle, one thing is certain: Slimming World is evolving, and some would say it’s about time! I’d love to hear what you think.
