Simple Self-Care – Self-Care September

I found the whole idea of self-care overwhelming initially. This idea of putting myself first and looking after me was alien. I’m always running around after the other people in my life and it seemed counterproductive to stretch myself further by investing in my own self-care. When my health took a down turn and I was mentally exhausted I knew something had to give so I started implementing some simple daily self-care practices.

My Simple Self-Care Practices

  1. Drink Enough Water

I NEVER used to drink enough water. I’d always be grabbing coffee on the go and occasionally I’d down a pint of water but only when I was already completely dehydrated. I suffered with overwhelming headaches, lack of concentration and my skin was horrendous. I realised that part of my self-care needed to be to up my water intake and coffee or other caffeine did not count!!

Drinking more water is a really simple way of taking care of me! Now I don’t get the headaches and I feel much more awake and alert! I didn’t realise how important this would be!

I try to drink plain or sparkling water because the sugars and calories contained in other drinks is often really high! One drink I like to consume as part of my self-care practice is the Water Infusions Range by Feel Good Drinks! I absolutely LOVE the Strawberry and Mint flavour it’s so refreshing and a great change from plain water! I love that they are 100% natural and don’t contain any added sugar yet they are packed full of flavour! It makes staying hydrated much more enjoyable!

  1. simple-self-careJournaling

I have never journaled before but it’s an important and simple part of my self-care practice now. I start my day by writing just a few sentences or whole pages depending on my mood. This is a great way to get out the root feelings and can easily shift my energy because I am not carrying around and holding everything in. Since I started journaling I have found I am much happier.

This is a really positive way to take some simple time out for me assess how I am feeling and move on in a positive direction!

  1. Meditation

I never thought I would be writing about how meditation is an essential and simple part of my self-care routine. I never thought I would be the kind of person that would meditate. Why? Simply because I never gave it a chance!! Meditation can be as simple as five minutes a day but it’s complete uninterrupted me time and I absolutely love it!! I without fail make sure I incorporate some kind of meditation into my day and I feel great for doing it!

  1. Exercise

I’m not a big exerciser. I don’t like the gym. The idea of sweating and getting out of breath is not exciting to me! That aside exercise is an important part of my self-care practice. If I don’t exercise I feel it in my mood and energy! I aim to do at least 30 minutes of exercise every day and it can be as simple as a walk. It’s just about moving – getting myself out of my own head for just a few minutes. I like to incorporate Yoga, Pilates and swimming where I can.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

This was a huge self-care game changer and probably the most simple to change! Having enough sleep is vital to staying healthy and feeling good! Sometimes I would be so wired and busy doing things that I’d get only a few hours of erratic sleep a night. I was constantly exhausted which meant that I drank more caffeine and neglected the signs that my body was telling me to slow down.

I have a busy mind so sometimes it’s hard to shut it off but I love spraying my pillow with some Organic Lavender Pillow Spray I got from Healthy2U. The smell is so relaxing and it’s designed to help with insomnia and other sleep issues. I spray it on as I am getting ready to get into bed and it helps me slip into a peaceful slumber! The scent is strong without feeling over powering or intrusive.

6. Looking After My Skin

I haven’t always been big on looking after my skin! If I’m honest I am just hugely lazy! I would often go to bed with my make up on and my skin was seriously suffering because of it!! I realised that I was having these huge breakouts and my skin looked dull and tired!

I also don’t like using too many chemicals so I have been using Cocofina coconut oil as a natural make up remover that just melts even the toughest make up away with ease! I love that it comes in a handy sachet size so I can travel with them, carry them in my handbag and always have them to hand! There are so many different coconut oils on the market but this is organic, cold pressed virgin coconut oil so I know my skin is getting the best!
