One of my favourite things to do around Christmas is play games, whether that be board games, table top games or something else entirely. Games are just a great way to keep everybody entertained, and they are fun for everyone involved. There are loads of different games on the market, but I’ve put together a few of the ones that have really stood out to me to give you some inspiration.
A game that is great for kids has to be 5 Second Rule Junior. This fast-paced junior version of the popular party game is perfect for younger players. It is a game sure to have everyone in a fit of hysterics! There are 200 game cards containing 400 questions but only 5 seconds to answer each one. What sounds like an easy concept is more complicated than you would think!
*Whoopee Doo is a fun family-friendly game that is sure to have you all in stitches. Players take a card and complete a challenge before passing to the next person. The twist is it has to be done while sitting on a giant inflatable whoopee cushion! Be careful not to be the one sitting on the whoopee cushion when the timer runs out though, or you’ll let out a toot!
OjO has developed many games that encourage curiosity and learning. These games promote the core STREAM skills (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering & Mathematics.) OjO’s games are available from their website, and they have just opened for investment on Kickstarter until the 25th of November 2019. I’ve put together a few of my top picks:
Coding is a fantastic skill to have and it helps build confidence and academic performance so it makes complete sense that coding is being taught to the younger generations and fun way to learn some of these skills is with the exciting Which Way? Coding Board Game for 4-8 years old. Children will love learning four top coding skills with the whole family.
Atomic Force is a family game incorporating chemistry that’s fun to play while also helping simplify complicated concepts for younger children. Suitable for ages 6+ players roll the dice and collect Protons, Neutrons and Electrons which they then use to build elements and compounds in order to progress to the finish point. The first player to end wins.
Shape Factory by OjO is a fun family game incorporating maths and creative thinking for ages 4+. This game is fun for the whole family while also helping develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. Players take it in turns to build an image out of shapes whilst the others have a minute to try and guess what it is.
We’ve all heard of the classic Mr & Mrs game where you answer in-depth questions about your partner in a bid to find out exactly how well you know each other. Well, now you can play the well-loved game with family and friends with over 1,000 questions to uncover things you never knew about those closest to you. It’s a fun and entertaining way to spend time together and with some blank cards included you can even create your own questions! Available from John Lewis RRP £20.
Interaction is a board game that combines the traditional practice of a board game with the technology of an app. Download the app onto a smartphone or tablet and unpack the game to play. Players take it, in turn, to complete time-based task from different categories such as creativity or knowledge. This is a great game for playing with family members of all ages because the app adjusts the questions and tasks based on the age of the player. An adult will receive different tasks to a child or teenager, for example, making the game fun for everyone. Available from *Amazon.
A Christmas themed game that is fun for the whole family is The Very Merry Christmas Game. Players move around the board collecting presents but be careful some presents are ‘naff’, so their value isn’t as high so make sure you give these to other players! The player with the best gifts at the end of the game is the winner. Be prepared to sing carols, pull crackers and dodge sprouts – sounds just like Christmas day to me! Available from *Amazon.
A day at the races can be a family occasion that is loved by all. Well, now you can have all the fun without even leaving the house. The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is a ‘devious’ family board game with the aim of the game being to win the most money. Players race their horses around the board while placing bets in secret but watch out for the mischief cards which can cause some havoc! Available from *Amazon RRP £22.
Corks is a fast-paced elimination game perfect for larger groups of up to 14 players! There are three different ways to play, but as soon as you start, you’ll find it hard to stop as its quite addictive. Suitable for ages 6+, the more players, the more fun to be had! Available from *Amazon RRP £15.
Older & Adult
Over the last couple of years, Escape Rooms have become popular attractions. Usually, players get 60 minutes to solve several puzzles and find clues to escape from a locked room. Well, now you can get the same mystery and thrill in your very own home with Escape Room – The Game. Three or more players get 60 minutes to solve puzzles, riddles and clues to see if you can escape! There are three different escape rooms to play – so the question is, will you escape? Available from *Amazon.
Love Island dominated our television sets this summer! If, like many, you are having withdrawals then fear not you can get your own Islander experience with Love Island The Game. Will you be crowned the winning couple? Find out as you battle it out over several challenges including a rather saucy version of charades and sexy pub-style quiz! Available from *Amazon RRP £15.
