Why I Won’t Be Taking Part In Elf On The Shelf

Merry Xmas stocking fillers for children gift guide

Henry asked me for the second year in a row of we would be getting an Elf on the Shelf visitor. I smiled to myself and with great delight as I broke the news to him that no, we would not be getting an elf visitor. He seemed a bit disheartened, but I made up an excuse that seemed to suffice for now at least. It’s not that I want to be mean and spoil his fun, but there are a few good reasons why I won’t be starting the Elf on the Shelf tradition despite wanting to keep the magic of Christmas alive this is just not one of the traditions for us.

No Elf on the Shelf for us!

It’s too much hard work

Honestly, the idea of executing 24 different elf scenarios before bed with a baby in tow doesn’t fill me with the joys of Christmas. I don’t have time to do the million and one things I’m already committed to so starting something new is out of the question. I’d mess it up. I’d be that mum that forgot to move the elf and ruined the magic of Christmas I don’t need that pressure!

I’m really not that creative.

I’m not! It’s unusual because my star sign is the Taurus and I’m very much true to form except when it comes to their creative edge. I just don’t have a creative side, and when trying to apply this to an Elf on the Shelf, it would be more than an epic fail.

It’s not something you can do just once

If you start the Elf on the Shelf tradition, then it’s something you’ll have to continue for years to come. It’s not something you can just dip your toe in to and see how you get on no Elf on the Shelf is a full-on year on year commitment, and I’m just not able to commit to that.

I don’t entirely get the concept

Maybe I’m just overthinking it but I just don’t get it. I’m all for threatening father Christmas is watching to instil good behaviour I mean 90% of my parenting is based on bribery, but this elf arrives on December the 1st and then causes absolute carnage then reports back to Father Christmas? Is it just me or does that elf need reporting to Santa? I get that it’s just a bit of festive fun but what is the point – really?

The elf creeps me out

Seriously he has that creepy smile and those piercing eyes I can’t think of anything that would make me feel less festive, to be honest!

So, no we will not be welcoming an Elf on the Shelf visitor this year or any other year, and I’m absolutely ok with that!
